FLOOD IN TUNNEL

Manapouri Pumps Fail (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 7. A flood in the Manapouri tailrace tunnel at Deep Cove after a power failure and pump breakdown on Sunday morning was still being cleared late tonight and tunnelling would resume. There were no workers in the tunnel when the pumps’ plugs blew and power to them failed early on Sunday morning. The pumps handled just on 500 gallons of water a minute so the water accumulated rapidly at the lowest point of the tunnel.
