22,000 Students This Year
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 7. Enrolments at New Zealand universities are expected to exceed 22,000 this year. Already more than 21,000 students have enrolled for the university year, and authorities expect hundreds of late enrolments.
In mid-1965 there were 20.269 attending universities. Students who have been doing their national service during the vacation will be among those enrolling late. Auckland has 6000 compared with 5560 last year. At Victoria the roll so far is 4650; last year the figure was 4463. Most universities report some overcrowding, and a few students have been excluded or directed elsewhere.
Canterbury has 4675 enrolments, but by the week-end expects 4850. Last year’s roll was 4501. Lincoln College has had 635 enrolments—6l more than last year. Enrolments at Otago were 3900 by the week-end, com pared with 3732 last year.
