THREE DAYS OF FRENCH
Sixth-Formers To Camp From March 18 to 20. 50 sixth-formers from schools in and near Christchurch will be “living French to the fullest” at the Woodend youth camp. This French camp, probably the first of its kind in New Zealand, is being organised by the Canterbury Language Teachers’ Association. founded in 1963 bj' Mr D. W. Jane to further the teaching of language in postprimary schools. Mr D. S. Walker has been president since 1964. A camp committee was appointed in October, consisting of Misses R. Nunn, P. Tobin and M. Lummis, and Messrs F. Meissen, J. Mcßride and D. Walker. The aim of the camp is to “saturate” the pupils in French to encourage their speaking and listening, and help develop their appreciation of French life and culture. Conducted entirely in French, the programme will include lectures, discussions, singing, quizzes and competitions, study periods, sports and games, and probably films from the French Embassy. A large number of teachers and students will be assisting. The organisers say valuable assistance has been given by Professor R. T. Sussex and the university French department, Dr. J. L. Moffatt, the post-primary schools inspector, and the Alliance Francaise. Visiting speakers will include Miss N. Anderson, Mrs T. Marsh, Mr J. Chaussivert, and two of Mr G. S. Troup’s children, recently returned from France.
