Ghanaians Pray On Independence Day
fN' .Z P. 4 Reuter — Copyright • ACCRA. March 7. Ghana marked its ninth anniversary of independence yesterday with solemn prayers instead of the usual ga\ celebrations. The new military rulers who deposed President Nkrumah 14 days ago decreed a national day of prayer in place of the usual parades and speeches.
In Accra, thousands of citizens flocked to churches and then returned to their homes, giving the city a quiet and deserted look. The modernistic Roman Catholic cathedral, the largest church in Accra, was packed with worshippers. At several other churches, the congregations overflowed on to the verandas outside. Ghana’s new military leader, Lieutenant-General Joseph Ankrah, the chairman of the National Liberation
Council, attended sendees at the Methodist church. No confirmation could be obtained officially of reports that China has sent a Note to the new Ghanaian leaders protesting alleged maltreatment of its nationals. The Peking Note was reported to have informed the new leadership that the Chinese Embassy staff was being cut to 18 persons. Some 400 Chinese and 1200 Soviet advisers and technicians have left the country under deportation orders following the coup against the Nkrumah government.
The size of the Chinese Embassy was not disclosed but observers believed it numbered in the dozens. The Chinese, as open supporters of Dr. Nkrumah. are highly I unpopular in the country. Because of being mistaken | for Chinese, many Japanese ' there have been involved in i incidents, but none of them j serious. RELATIONS BROKEN ■ In Guinea, Dr. Nkrumah yesterday vowed to return to Ghana to put to death all the I leaders of the military regime that deposed him. The new Government in Accra has warned Dr Nkrumah that if he arrives in Ghana he will be arrested and tried as a traitor to the country. Guinea has rejected a Note from the new Ghana Government transmitted to Guinea, breaking diplomatic relations
