6 MONTH ENTRY

Complaint Supported <N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 6. Shock that a Hong Kong teaching fellow at the University of Otago could obtain only six-month entry permit to New Zealand was voiced by the' international vice-pre-sident of the New Zealand University Students’ Association (Miss Helen Sutch). Mr Odrian Chan would lecture while completing a Ph.D degree, which will take three years, said Miss Sutch. “Yet he is granted only a temporary entry permit and the possibility of being able to stay for two years,” she said. “New' Zealand universities are already at a disadvantage in that they cannot offer competitive salaries. To low financial incentive is added insecurity of tenure for university lecturers who happen to be Asian. Miss Sutch said that it was also disturbing that Mr Chan was not able to find out that he would be granted only a six month temporary entry permit until he had refused other’ offers of jobs.

Rich Swagger.—Lester Samuel Cohen, a well-known Johannesburg tramp and recluse, was taken to hospital suffering from lack of food. After he died, a search of his room disclosed piles of coins and bank notes worth £375 and in a bank he had deposits worth £3750.
