Brilliant Recovery By Burwood Four

The recovery of the Burwood four skipped by J. Ledgard, which after being down 1-16 after eight ends beat J. Turpin (Canterbury), 23-17, was the outstanding performance of the first day of the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s champion-of-champions fours.

The heavy greens reduced play to two rounds. The next rounds will be played at the Cashmere green on Saturday The Canterbury four seemes set for an easy win when its good drawing play brought 16 points after eight ends. But then Ledgard’s four struck its form. Tight leading and fine drawing saw the Burwood team score steadily and Canterbury did not gain another point until the last end, but by then it was far to late. Champions in Defeat The Morrison avenue team, which included the champion pairs team, D. McCone and C. Adams, lost Its first game, 12-15, to New Brighton, but the New Brighton team was beaten decisively by Oxford in the second round. N. McNab (R.S.A.), who was runner-up in the open pairs, had a 25-9 win over R. J. Rickerby's Riccarton Racecourse side, but had a harder struggle against Lyttelton Watersiders before winning 21-15, C.
