27 Selected For Surf Life-Saving Squad

(New Zealand Press Association' NEW PLYMOUTH. Five junior and 22 senior surf life-savers were named in a short-list New Zealand squad to keep in training for a test against an Australian team next season.

The national selec- | tors (Messrs K. J. F. Farey. J. Ferguson and S. D. Tarrant) announced the squad after the national championships ended at Oakura yesterday. Trials will be held early next season before announcing the New Zealand test team. The selectors said the list is not final and may be added to. The squad is;— Juniors: B. Wilson (Kiwi),l W. Clow, J. The Waikanae club won the top honours at the championships, the senior team taking the “blue riband” event, the Nelson Shield for six-man res-

cue and resuscitation. The junior team won the junior six-man R. and R.. and the club won the aggregate points prize, taking the Allan Gardner Memorial Trophy.

Runner-up to Waikanae in aggregate points was Eastern United (Auckland), with Taylor’s Mistake (Canterbury) and Muriwai (Auckland) tieing for third place. The surf and sea conditions on Saturday caused several incidents. The women’s sixman R. and R. event failed to provide a result when the entire field failed to reach the buoys and was disqualified for exceeding the time limit of 20 minutes.
