Age Benefit
Sir, —It is obvious from recent letters published in your columns that many anomalies exist in the regulations governing Social Security benefits generally. For instance, an invalid beneficiary with a number of children to support and educate, is not allowed to earn any more than an age beneficiary whose children are normally self-sup-porting. Why?—Yours, etc., BREAD AND DRIPPING. February 24, 1966.
[The district registrar of the Social Security Department (Mr E. B. Pyne) replies: “The correspondent is correct in his statement that the income margin for invalid beneficiaries is the same as for age beneficiaries, whether or not they have dependent children. If a beneficiary has insufficient means to provide for the family requirements he could qualify for supplementary assistance, which would take into account the expense of maintaining the children.”]
