Blackboards

Sir, —I think the statement, on your education page, “Blackboard glare is a constant and unsolved problem,” calls for comment. Surely, in an age when men can produce super-balls, electron microscopes, and send a spaceprobe plunging into Venus, the solving of such a problem should be a very minor task. Having used a shine-free set-up for the last three years myself, my interest in the matter is now purely an academic one. I raised the question on behalf of those whom the board claims to be its clients, the children. Thank you for the delightful misprint which states, “Chalkdust’is still the bone of every teacher.” Autopsies may well show that there is much truth in this.—Yours, etc., J. F. WILLIAMS. March 4, 1966.
