CONGRESS GETS PLAN

U.S. Accident Toll

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 3. President Johnson yesterday asked Congress for 700 million dollars for a six-year programme to reduce traffic deaths.

He said action must be taken to cut the accident toll, which last year was 59,000 deaths on the highways, 1300 in aircraft, 1500 in ships, and 2300 on the railways. The toll of Americans killed since the introduction of the motor-car at the end of the last century—l.s million—was “truly unbelievable” and more than all deaths suffered in all wars in which the United States had engaged, he said.
