MATHEMATICS COURSE
Teachers To Learn New Approach More than 300 enrolments have been received from primary school teachers in the Christchurch area for a course on the new approach to mathematics. The initiative came from the teachers’ professional organisation (the North Canterbury branch of the Educational Institute). School inspectors fully support the plan. A committee, Messrs R. F. Armstrong, E. N. Penlington, R. E. Porteous, and J. G. Reed, has been working on the programme since early last year. Because of the large numbers, four parallel courses will be held at the Linwood, Heaton and Kirkwood Intermediate Schools and the Christchurch Teachers’ College one night a week from March 10 until April 14—six weeks.
Twenty-four primary teachers who have been using the new approach to mathematics have been divided into four teams to lecture and hold workshop sessions at each course.
Mr Armstrong said the response had exceeded expectations, and it was clear that the object of spreading widely among teachers the new ideas on teaching mathematics would be fully realised.
