RACING Devastation Picked For Jackson Stakes

“The Press” Special Service

WELLINGTON.

The privilege of being the first winner of the elegant Thormanby Trophy will be decided today in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui. The first choice is Devastation.

If he wins it will be the second successive year that the Jackson has fallen to a three-year-old colt ridden by A. T. Jones of Hastings. Jones and Devastation will be trying to win for Wellington owner, Mr E. H. Debrecency, a figurine sculpted by the British artist Jean Walwyn. The trophy was donated by the British Bloodstock Agency It went to the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Jackson Stakes in recognition of the fact that the Wanganui district has been a centre of breeding whose standing owed a considerable debt to stallions imported through the 8.8. A. Fittingly, the stakes has a lengthy past and many of the names involved in its history are famous. Devastation’s claims on the stakes are perhaps better than those of any of his opponents if he is allowed the edge which a good three-year-old

is said to have over older rivals under weight-for-age conditions.

Devastation’s performances this season rank him not only as a good horse but as the best of those struggling in the wake of the remarkable Peterman.

Devastation has had 13 starts this term. He has won five —the Wellington and Hawke’s Bay Guineas, the C.J.C. Churchill Stakes and two open sprints—and been placed in all but two of the others, including a third in the New Zealand Derby.

Devastation's last two starts were at Trentham. In wet ground, which suits few Knight s Romance horses, he was narrowly beaten by Rohe Potae in the Wellington Stakes and later he was a good sixth in the Adams Mile. He seems a better horse now and is almost certainly better than when Starlit beat him by a long neck under Jackson Stakes conditions at Awapuni in December. Trial Offer and Starlit are two of Devastation's most for-

. mtdable opponents. Trial Offer is a mare of quality and her ' race for fourth last week over 10 furlongs was her best in . three starts since the spring ’ Starlit, a four-year-old mare ’ like Trial Offer, will be giving • Devastation 61b. Starlit last . started In the Adams Mile and she ran a creditable tenth ' That was preceded by a fourth over six furlongs at Trentham. , a failure over a middle distance 1 at Hastings and her defeat of I Devastation at Awapuni. I Tara's Pride is a fine galloper which has won good races but has run a frustrating number >of minor placings. He ran . second, beaten by a length and a quarter, to Chatal in the ' Adams Mile and he was not ’ started since. He was second In last year's Jackson Stakes. He . will be ridden by W. D. Skelton ’ The field is a good one A ■ glamour horse such as Peterman ' is an undoubted attraction, but > the Wanganui club has little ' cause to regret his absence - With the absence of Might I whose connexions have opted I for the sprint, the three-year olds will be represented only ■ by Devastation. He should be ' enough. Worthy Chat and Tipperary , Tom are picked for the T A B double which will be run on the I Wanganui Queen Anne Cup and j the Wanganui Flying Thousand The Queen Anne Cup is run over a mile and a half, a dis ' tance which Worthy Chat seem« ' to prefer. Tipperarv Tom has not started since his third to Pher . Pride and Wavering over six furlongs at Trentham. He missed a little work after a minor operation which prevented him from start ing last week, hut his trial on Thursday was satisfactory. The three Flying Thousand acceptors which were in the stakes as well—Might. Wavering and Scramble—have all been scratched from the stakes. Might, which won well last week, has a change of rider, n W. Taylor will replace W D Dymond, who rides Tippcrar' Tom. The track Is fast.
