Slow Away, But Won
So Lovely and Last Dip all but dominated betting on the Cheviot Handicap, and they also dominated the finish.
Last Dip. the first choice, appeared to have it won when she came to the front inside the furlong, but So Lovely closed fast and beat her going away by half a length. All the honours were with the winner, which was one of the slowest away, but Last Dip's second was also creditable after starting wide out.
So Lovely, a close relation of the good winner. Cadiz, is owned and trained at Nelson by Mr W. L. Healey and was ridden by J. A. Messent.
She was third in the corresponding race on Saturday after being last to the home turn.
Taxman. an all-the-way winner on the first day of the meeting, attempted to emplov the same tactics again, but after leading until well into the straight he came to the end of his run. and it was left to Serengeti, another long shot, to keep the Westland horses In the picture. Serengeti outfinished Omasong for third, and Takatua. Glamis Lad. Taxmap. and No Smoke were the next best.
