WELSH HEAD RUGBY TABLE
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright) CARDIFF. Wales beat Scotland by eight points (a goal and a try) to three (a penalty goal) in a Rugby international at Cardiff on Saturday. Wales led, 3-0, at half-time.
The win gave Cardiff the lead in the Rugby international championship table.
Wales, which beat England, 11-6, in its first international of the season, now has four points from two games. Watched by 55,000 spectators, the teams squelched through mud which made the match as much a test of stamina as skill. Strong In Defence
Wales mastered the conditions well and had so much of the game that it might well have won by a far wider margin. Scotland rarely showed in attack, but gave little away in defence. K. Jones scored both Welsh tries, one in each half. K. Bradshaw converted the second. Scotland’s penalty goal was kicked near the end by S. Wilson.
The Welsh forwards never relaxed their pace, even when a first-half injury reduced B.
Price to a virtual passenger. G- J. Prothero, A. I. E. Pask and H. G. Morgan were a powerful trio in the loose. Link With Backs
A. R. Lewis and D. Watkins, who kicked a fine length and punted ahead judiciously, formed an efficient link with the three-quarters, among whom Jones was outstanding. G. R. T. Hodgson, who replaced the injured T. Price at full-back, was eminently safe. It was nearly all Wales in the first half, but its only score came after 13 minutes, when S. G. Watkins sent Jones in for a try.
More powerful Welsh attacking in the second half was rewarded when D. Watkins paved the way for Jones's second try, converted by Bradshaw.
Wilson, who was among Scotland’s best defenders, landed a penalty goal to cut the arrears, but by then the match was virtually won and lost..
