Surfing Cup To Auckland
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Although Canterbury teams and individual competitors performed very well at the inter-district surf life-saving contest, held at Lyall Bay on Saturday, they were unable to do better than third place.
The contest, and the Norrie Trophy, was won by Auckland with 41 points, to Wellington’s 28 and Canterbury’s 15. Most of Canterbury’s points came from minor placings.
An odd feature of the contest was that Gisborne, which won both of the reel events, did not even do as well as Canterbury in the aggregate. Some critics suggested that the points system favoured individual performers too much, to the detriment of team-work.
Canterbury’s star perform-, ers were the veteran beltman, A. Lee, and the board specialist, R. Dalton. Lee’s performance in getting to within a few feet of the New Zealand champion, R. Harker (Auckland), in the beltmen’s event was probably the best of his long career. Canterbury’s team-work was strong, enough to produce a six-man deduction of less than seven points. Under other circumstances this might have won the event, but it would have taken a top team indeed to have beaten the performance of either Gisborne or Wellington. Auckland's strength was in possessing the double champions, Harker and G. Allnutt, who made a clean sweep of individual events both in the senior and junior grades.
