Lead Unchanged In Women‘s Softball
Monowai and Avon still lead the senior women’s softball competition. They gained easy wins against Spreydon and Western Suburbs, respectively, on Saturday. Kaiapoi proved to be too strong in all departments for a lethargic West Old Girls team. Results:— Avon 10. Western Suburbs 0. Monowai 10, Spreydon 1. Kaiapoi U. West Old Girls 9. Monowai v. Spreydon Spreydon's batters had difficulty mastering the pitching of B. Makison and only one batter,
M. May, managed to hit safely during the game. The times when the Spreydon batters did manager to put the bat to the ball caused havoc in the Monowai field and many runners made base on errors. Spreydon scored its only run of the game when H. Cartmell, safely to third base on errors, scored on a sacrifice by S. Pateman.
Monowai was slow to start, facing good fielding, and one run was all it could manage in Its first two innings. A threebag hit by N. Beale gave Monowai two runs in Its third. After a three-bag hit by M. Hapuku in the fourth innings. Spreydon collapsed in the field and six runners scored.
Avon v. Western Suburbs Western Suburbs failed to show much aggression with the bat and Avon had little difficulty in holding the side scoreless. Avon scored its only run in the first three innings from a hit by H. Williams. With the game fairly tight at this stage Avon produced stronger batting In the face of this pressure. Western Suburbs wilted in the field and Avon had little difficulty in scoring nine runs in the next two innings to have the game called off with a 10-run advantage in the fifth Innings. S. Dalkie, the Western Suburbs’ pitcher, gained four strike-outs in the game. Kaiapoi v. West Old Girls Kaiapoi began well to take a handy lead over West Old Girls. With J. Kimber showing good control on the mound and going strong support from her field. Kaiapoi always looked the better team. West Old Girls, with lack of control in the batting and inept fielding, never looked like winning. Kaiapoi batted more strongly than West and, aided by the slack fielding, scored at will. West Old Girls failed to show any purpose with the bat. Other Results Third Grade.—West Old Girls 19, Monowai B 0; Western Suburbs 8. Avon 7; Templeton 7, United 0.
