South Brighton On Top In Surf Drill
South Brighton maintained its fine reputation for excellence in drill events when its teams won the six-man rescue and resuscitation finals in the third Canterbury championship surf lifesaving carnival at Waimairi beach yesterday.
In the heats of the senior surf race. North Beach dominated: its competitors won all four heats and one of them, I. L, Gunthorp, toppled the defending champion, D. Staples (Waimairi). The surfers had a readymade gallery—the beach was black with people as far south as the eye could see—but the ocean was in a boisterous mood and men and craft often were tossed around like corks.
A heavy surf was running all day and a southerly rip increased in strength as the afternoon wore on. Competitors in swimming events had to follow a diagonal course to the north-east to counteract the effect of the rip. In the women's six-man championship, three teams, Sumner, Taylor’s Mistake and Waimairi, failed to reach the buoys.
The four North Beach surfers to win the heats of the individual surf race were Gunthorp, D. Dalton, L. D. Mclntosh and G. McKenzie. All won comfortably, although McKenzie finished behind J. Hughes (Waimairi). who competed as an individual. The pity of it
is Gunthorp and Mclntosh will miss the final at the fourth carnival. They wiH be returning from the national water polo championships at Otorohanga. J. A. Lee (South Brighton), who had competed lor Canterbury in the inter-district events at Lyall Bay, Wellington, lhe previous day. was a meritorious fourth in the heat won by Dalton.
South Brighton enjoyed a field day in the six-man everits. sweeping to success In the senior, junior and women's championship finals. The club's B teams gained second place in the women’s event and third in the senior title. In this final the B team's Instructor. N. Roake, substituting for a sick surfer, drew the belt position but acquitted himself well. South Brighton teams achieved a similar high standard of drill in all sections of the four-man alarm heals. Inches Apart Rex Dalton (North Beach) did not defend his senior surf ski title but his brother. Don. appeared likely to succeed him after a good win in the first heat against A. Luton (Tayior s Mistake). But in the final Luton snatched victory from Dalton tn a close finish. Only a tew Inches separated the two contestants.
Dalton was recompensed by winning the senior paddleboard title. The specialist in this event in the last New Zealand team, Dalton drew steadily away from his rivals and although T. Jay iWaimairi) and M. craw (New Brighton) caught a shoot near the end. he held on to win. A Sumner girl. H. Sandle. became the first holder of the women's beach sprint title when she outran her four rivals to win comfortably. Results: Senior
