“Free” Benefits
Sir, —As a recent arrival from Rhodesia, I was told so much about all the things that the State provided, among them free medical service and free education. On my two visits, so far, to a doctor, I have been charged 10s each and my two high school children arrived home tonight with a demand for £2 Ils lid each, making a total of £5 3s lOd, which I have to find by Monday. I am not complaining about these charges, but I do consider that a government is dishonest when it falsely represents these facts to intending immigrants. I mentioned these matters to a recent acquaintance, who said that I was fortunate in not having five school children.—Yours, etc.,
