The 51st State?

Sir, —Fortunately for New Zealand, Mr Calweil’s theory that “New Zealand must become part of the United States” is based on the fallacy that “a small nation cannot stand alone.” Switzerland, one-twentieth the size of New Zealand, not only retains its independence, but has earned the respect of alienations by its immense contributions to international co-operation, especially as founder of the Red Cross. New Zealand could be to South-east Asra what Switzerland is to Europe. As a leader in the development of health and infant welfare services—the Plunket Society for example —New Zealand could be a world training centre for young nurses of all nations, irrespective of colour or creed, teaching them to save

countless lives and to improve the living standards of their own people.. This is a destiny more in keeping with New Zealand’s aims and traditions than degeneration into an American colony.— Yours, etc., CONCORDIA SALUS. February 4, 1966.
