Penalties For Traffic Offences

Sir, —My firm belief is that much heavier penalties should be tried —for exceeding speed limits, for example. We have weekly shoals of cases, and fines of about £4—even as low as £2! It is just too absurd. Why not try £4O and £5O fines and see what, if any effect it would have. Perhaps the most effective way would be to cancel licences for a time. This should certainly be done in the case of failing to yield right-of-way. I doubt if the plain patrol cars are given a fair trial, by having these trifling fines. The drunken driver is another proposition. 1 am afraid we shall never be rid of him. In the news lately is a town in the United States, where cancelling of licences is used according to the nature of the offence, with much success.— Yours, etc., RULE OBSERVER. February 3, 1966.
