Marylands And Mount Magdala
Sir, —1 have admired the work of the Brothers of St. John of God in both Christchurch and Melbourne, and wish them well in their new surroundings at Mount Magdala. It is refreshing to hear this order and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd speaking of re-education, counselling and short-term care, all of which require greater recognition by the community at large. But along with the “changing emphasis of social work” and “the need to develop smaller institutions” we have the news that the Government will buy about six acres of “Marylands” for extensions to Sunnyside Hospital. Surely this monstrous institution should be whittled away instead of being inflated still further. Medieval garb would be more fitting to our Health Department than to the forward-looking orders of the Catholic church.—Yours, etc.,
VARIAN J. WILSON February 6, 1966.
