MORE MEN NEEDED

Vacancies At Port

An additional 291 men (19 gangs) would have been required at 7 a.m. yesterday when work began on the Lyttelton waterfront. There were 626 union men and 56 non-unionists engaged. Vessels idle were the Kopara and Konini but both were at unworkable berths. Vessels short-manned were the Poranui, Port Hobart, Firbank, Kowa Maru and Saracen.

Some relief was provided with the departure of the Knight Templar, Kawerau. Maranui and Australind yesterday. Because of this, two of three vessels anchored in the stream, the Shoan Maru and New Zealand Star are both expected to berth this morning. The Shoan Maru will go to Cashin Quay which is now in constant use.

A third vessel, the Harpalycus, will remain at anchor and should be joined by the Cap Colorado which is due today. Although rail waggons were in heavy demand, there were sufficient for normal work.

The tonnage in port yesterday was only two-thirds of the tonnage in port during the record congestion in May. 1961.
