Canberra Defence Talks

Sir, —In sipte of all conjecture and assumption regarding the Canberra defence talks, it appears certain that New Zealand will be asked to spend more money on costly armaments, more troops to prop up the last tottering remnants of British rule in the Far East, and'"more support for the bankrupt American position in Indo-China. Are we to be led by the nose into supporting an alien foreign policy that is more concerned with bolstering right-wing and often avowedly reactionary regimes, than with the urgent needs of the poor and under-privileged in this area? Are we to become slaves of a foreign policy that is dictated by Washington and London? There is one alternative that is clear and unmistakable. We must wtihdraw all our armed forces from Asa.—Yours, etc.. CRITICUS. February 2, 1966.
