Alcoholism

Sir,—Of the many points “Wake Up” raises, the question of pressure is one newspaper producers could pursue. “Whenever there is a cjnference of our ‘best people,' cocktail parties are invariably held," he says, pointing up the power of example to young people. When the Prime Minister is pictured with a glass in his hand, or the Mayor with whisky which students have relaved from Dunedin, or the Bishop of Christchurch pulling beer at the Haast road opening celebrations, 1 wonder whether they enjoy this photographic prominence. Perhaps they are as embarrassed as “Wake Up” by the social mores that bid us conform, for I am sure that no leading citizen would like to feel that his example is damaging a lesser brother or child. Local photographers may learn a new angle from the “Manchester Guardian” which this week pictures Prime Minister Mrs Gandhi unashamedly drinking milk. That’s newsworthy!—Yours, etc..
