LEARNING TO READ

New System At Palace (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 17. Prince Andrew, who will be six next month, has been learning to read and write by the new, speedy, initial training alphabet system, the “Daily Express” diarist reported. He has been using the system with the group of friends who attend his class at Buckinghai •. Palace each morning. They include Viscount Linley. Princess Margaret's four-year-old son.

Prince Philip introduced the system into class after talks with the inventor, Sir James Pitman, publisher and a former Conservative member of Parliament. The system is based on a 44-character alphabet which enables children to read and write more quickly. Introduced in 1961, it is now being used by about 1500 schools in Britain as well as other parts of the world.
