Clay The Best
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright* NEW YORK, Jan. 17 The heavyweight champion, Cassius Clay, was presented with the Edward J. Neil trophy last night as the Boxing Writers’ Association's fighter of the year. The 23-year-old Clay, winner of all 22 of his professional fights, stopped two rivals in title defences in 1965. He knocked out Sonny Liston with one punch in a controversial first round knockout at Lewiston, Maine. Then he stopped another ex-champion, Floyd Patterson, in the 12th round of a one-sided bout at Las Vegas, Nevada.
Joe Louis, the former world heavy-weight champion, has joined the Cassius Clay camp. Clay said today that Louis had been engaged for training and advising.
