Mixed Fortunes For Canterbury Kiwis

ARMIDALE (New South Wales). The touring Canterbury Kiwi Cricket team had a win and a loss in matches played over the week-end.

On Saturday the tourists downed Walcha by 108 runs on the first innings but then went down to New England on the first innings yesterday.

Sent into bat on a matting wicket at Walcha the Kiwis made 240 runs in 173 minutes. B. Isherwood and R. Gearry were in great form, with Isherwood playing one of the best knocks of the tour to score 82 runs.

Including 10 fours and two sixes, early in Walcha's innings. M. Glen bowled exceptionally well. Swinging the new ball both ways he had all the early batsmen in trouble and deserved better figures than two for 25.

The off-spinner, C. Broad, also bowled well to take three for one off three overs.

Scores: Canterbury Kiwis, 240 (B. Isherwood 82, R. Gearry 59). Walcha, 132 (C. Broad, three for one, N. W. Wilder, two for 14, M. Glen, two for 25). New England

Batting first on a slow wicket against New England the Kiwis slumped from four for 90, to be all out for 141. The captain, C. L. Bull, batted well early in the innings and P. McGarth and C. McKenzie figured in a good partnership with McKenzie playing some excellent shots in front of the wicket. Due to some first-class bowling by Wilder, New England were six for 71 but then P. McCann who toured Canterbury last year with the Emu colts took command and finished with a fine 61 not out. For the most part the Kiwis bowled badly and even Wilder who at one stage had five

for 21 lost control and finished with six for 75.

Scores: Canterbury Kiwis, 141 (C. L. Bull, 35, C. C. McKenzie, 30, P. McGarth, 22, R. C. Merrin, 21. New England, 174 for nine. N. W. Wilder, six for 75.
