U.S. Stratofortress, Tanker Collide
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MADRID, January 17. A U.S. Stratofortress and a KCI3S tanker plane crashed near Almeria on the south-east coast of Spain, apparently after a collision while refuelling, Spanish officials said today.
The Spanish reports said one of the two aircraft crashed into the Mediterranean sea off Almeria and the other on land.
The reports said at least four survivors parachuted from one of the planes, apparently the Stratofortress. Almost daily KCI3S jet tanker planes leave this base on assignment to refuel Stratofortress nuclear bombers which fly to Europe from American bases on training missions.
Later the 16th Air Force headquarters spokesmen confirmed a Stratofortress from an American base and a jet tanker from the United States Morow base near Sevilla, Spain, had crashed They said the bombers normally carry a crew of six. The tankers have four to six crewmen.
Headquarters officers at Torrejon base immediately flew to the scene in a jet liaison plane.
