GAMBLING IN U.K.
Turn-over Of £lom Weekly (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 17. London is now regarded as the gambling centre of Europe and in a good week its clubs have a turnover of £lom the “Daily Telegraph” reports. With stakes from a few shillings upwards, casinos are no longer the preserve of the rich or the Continental traveller. the paper says. Gambling clubs have spread throughout Britain since the Betting and Gaming Act made gaming legal in 1961. There were about 100 clubs in London and possibly 1000 in the provinces. But London's gain has been France’s loss. Unofficial estimates suggest that since 1961 the French casinos, particularly those in the north, have lost up to 60 per cent of their customers.
