‘AUSTRALIAN OF YEAR’
Choreographer Named (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE, Jan. 14. A ballet dancer and choreographer, Robert Helpmann, was today named “Australian of the Year” by the Australian Day Council Committee. The chairman of the council, Sir Norman Martin, said the 56-year-old dancer had been selected unanimously. “By his world-wide success and association with the Australian Ballet overseas, Mr Helpmann has won renown for himself and honour for the land of his birth,” Sir Norman Martin said. “He is one of the most versatile members of the theatrical profession in the Englishspeaking world.”
Other Australians to receive the award in recent years have included the scientists Sir Macfarlane Burnet and Sir John Eccles, the opera star, Joan Sutherland, and the swimmer. Dawn Fraser.
