CENSUS IN MARCH
Dept’s Staff Requirements (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 16. A computer will take less than nine months instead of the three years for mechanical-sorting equipment to process information from this year’s population census. Much more information will be available by using the computer, the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) said on Saturday. The census which will be conducted in March has been in preparation for two years. Two extra questions have been added to the questionnaire. They concern educational qualifications and household equipment. The department of statistics will employ another 150 staff to supplement the 350 permanent members.
During the two weeks when the questionnaire is delivered and collected an additional 2300 staff members will be hired.
