West-University Ahead
With the Old Collegians’ score just before lunch at 100 for three, the wisdom of sending them In to bat seemed doubtful, but within the hour the action was justified and West University had dismissed the remaining batsmen for 39 runs. The pitch at Elmwood Park was soft and the slow bowlers, Sharp and Wright were soon on attack. Both turned the ball considerably but slowly, and the early batsmen were not unduly perturbed, although Sharp took the valuable wicket of England.
Then, with a stroke of brilliance, Hastings brought on Veitch who. with a mixture of good and bad balls, managed to persuade the batsmen that he was not just a Sunday afternoon bowler. He finished with the day’s best figures, three for 25. England again batted with assurance and was particularly strong on the leg side. Hunt scored 30 runs in 33 minutes, straight driving anything loose with great power, and Bishop batted patiently for 23. Old Collegians, without M. G. Lester and N. W. Wilder, did well to contain the strong West University batting side and took
six wickets before Its total was passed. The innings was built around Hastings. At first a little uncertain in his timing, he later batted most forcefully and confidently, his 50 coming in an hour.
At the end of the innings, Nottage pushed the score along quickly, hitting six fours and making 50 in 63 minutes. The Old Collegians offspinners, Carpenter and Clark, both bowled well and kept the ball well up to the batsmen. The umpires are Messrs W. R. Hobbs and R. G. Aitken.
