Marshall Bats With Confidence
East-Shirley made another bad start when Thomson broke through the early batting but Grocott, in convincing form this season, and Hicks, made a useful stand of 42. Then Grocott went and Hartland completed a purple patch with the first hat-trick of his career. Hearn, in his first senior game, was caught at slip, and Taylor played over a rather faster ball and was bowled. The rest of the innings was dominated by Marshall who arrived late and went in lower than usual. His batting brimmed with confidence and with the diligent Adamson, he added 54 for the ninth wicket. Marshall hit 10 fours in his 47 not out.
On a pitch conducive to movement, Hartland, now only an occasional bowler, bowled accurately and, at times, dangerously, moving the ball a little in the air and sometimes off the pitch. Hartland also gave Sydenham a good start with his opening partner of about four years ago. B. J. Bayley, who has just returned from Hamilton. Both hit
the ball crisply before falling in the space of three balls. Then the East-Shirley mediumpacer, Kelly, took over and settled into a long spell of steady in-swlng, subduing even K. Thomson, who was in confident form, to no runs from 22 balls. He took two wickets In an over and the spinners, Adamson and D. I. Cameron, took up the attack, both bowling accurately and making a great hole in the middle of the innings, wickets falling at 90, 91, 101, 103, 110 and 117. The Sydenham captain, B. J. Salt, gave brief resistance with A. J. Howard but the last two came together with 17 still needed for the first-innings lead and less tthan 10 overs to go if the bonus points were to be earned. The quicker bowlers returned and K. N. Priest survived some anxious moments against the swing bowling before throwing his bat at a ball from Shewan, sending it over the slips heads, and to the boundary for the lead and bonus points. The umpires are Messrs 3. W. T. Owens and B. Dennison.
