Barrett And Miller In Fine Partnership
An Old Boys team distinguished by the presence of four Hadlees started well against Riccarton, but was then countered by Barrett and Miller, who scored 82 for the third wicket in 69 minutes. Miller making 64 of them. His was a remarkable display of powerful batting—he hit 10 fours —and by lunch Blccarton had reached 145 for three, a remarkably high score for the opening period of play. Miller played a daring and delightful innings. In occasional senior appearances before, he made little impression except with his fielding, but on Saturday he allied confidence to strong strokes, particularly off the front foot. Barrett, much less colourful, made his runs almost entirely on the on side, and it took him four hours to reach his century. It was an innings of tremendous value. It Is a pity
Barrett does not play off-side strokes well, for he is sound and watchful. B. A. Bolton, with right-hand leg breaks, was able to place only three fieldsmen in front of the wicket on the off side.
D. W. Stead made some useful runs and later E. R. Hignett was again undefeated. Ryan bowled very steadily and D. R. Hadlee, in his first senior game, made a good impression with his out-swing bowling. Finding a patch from which the ball sometimes lifted awkwardly, Kiddey bowled well at the start of Old Boys’ Innings and three were down for 11. But M. A. Clements and W. R. Barbarel added 89 in an hour with resourceful batting and were still together at the close. Barbarel, in particular, took risks, but they have put Old Boys back in the game. The umpires are Messrs T. Mathie and L. C. Moor*.
