Work At Hellaby’s On Monday
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 14. Mutton butchers at R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd., Auckland, were prepared to resume work on Monday morning, the secretary of the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union (Mr T. P. Kelly) said tonight.
No sheep have been killed at the company's Westfield works since Tuesday morning, when the butchers walked off because of a dispute with the management over the job rate.
After day-long talks between the union and the management today Mr Kelly said that the men would report for work on Monday so that further negotiations would not be prejudiced. The dispute began when the butchers walked off the job after the management had refused to pay a minimum rate of £5 10s a day.
Agreement has been reached between the Freezing Workers’ Union and the management of the Waitaki Farmers’ Freezing Company and work resumed at the Pukeuri works today. Work stopped yesterday after slaughtermen claimed the drinking water was unfit for human consumption. Water for the works is drawn from the Waitaki river, through a water race and is held in an open onemillion gallon tank next to the company’s buildings. A new four million-gallon water tank with chlorination and filtration plants is being built and it is expected it will be completed before the next killing season.
