POLICEMAN TO RETIRE

Senior-Sergeant J. P. Mather Senior Sergeant J. P. Mather, who will retire on Monday after 38 years in the police force, was bidden farewell at the Central Police Station yesterday. Senior Sergeant Mather joined the force in 1928 and has served in Auckland, Dunedin, Balclutha, Timaru and Christchurch. For the last two years he has been police welfare officer in Christchurch. Previously he was police recruiting officer. Police from a wide area, including many from country areas, attended the farewell. The Commissioner of Police (Mr C. L. .Spenser), Mr P. Kearney, a retired Chief Superintendent of Police, and Mr C. Reardon, a retired chief inspector, also attended.
