EUROPE IN GRIP OF COLD WAVE
(.V z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, January 12. A sudden bitter cold wave has gripped most of Britain and Western Europe.
I At least 11 deaths have been attributed to the snow during the last three days.
In Britain, a snow storm swept most parts of southern England, Wales and the West Country during the night, causing chaos tn road and rail traffic.
Many people were unable to get to work and the supply of electricity was restricted in some places.
Snow ploughs had to deal with about 300 abandoned vehicles on a main road into Cardiff and cars were littered over snow-bound roads in the rest of South Wales. Trains ran up to five hours late. The Automobile Association said that at least 25
counties were affected by the snow. The storm missed London, but the city shivered in a cold east wind. Airlines Affected
A railway worker was killed and another seriously injured on Monday when they were struck by an engine while clearing snow off rails on the outskirts of Paris. Aircraft traffic at Le Bourget and Orly airports in Paris was delayed up to two hours.
Parisian drivers crept through ice-covered streets, while style-conscious women made their first practical use of the modish white boots. Blanket of Snow
I Snow which has blanketed I most of Italy for the last few [days spread to the northern 'plains yesterday. Milan had its first snow and Venice had a snowstorm. Rome, with higher temperatures, had only rain. In the north-east Italian town of Udine, 300 people were admitted to hospital with bronchial pneumonia. The Netherlands, Denmark. Germany, Belgium and Australia also had freezing temperatures. Zurich and Geneva had about 4in of snow during the night.
