SANCTIONS’ EFFECT
Some Jobless In Rhodesia (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SALISBURY, January 11. The Rhodesian Government admitted today that economic sanctions imposed by Britain and other countries on Rhodesia had resulted in some unemployment, the Associated Press reported. However, a Government statement said “it is still too early to draw conclusions.”
The statement, issued by the Acting Minister of Labour, Mr P. van Heerden, gave no figures. Government “buying teams" have moved into the droughtstricken areas of western and southern Rhodesia to buy up cattle which hard-pressed farmers wish to sell because of poor grazing. Hundreds of cattle are believed to have perished because of the drought, particularly in tribal trust areas, but no official figures have been given.
