Paremoremo Problems
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 13. Peaty, unstable ground and bore springs have been added to the list of problems encountered by the contractors at the £1,750,000 prison building scheme at Paremoremo. “Coupled with the weather, they haven’t made for a successful start to the job,” said the project manager. Mr J. H. Harper, of Waite-Tileman. Ltd., today. The first peat was found during excavations for a 10ft deep service duct beneath the prison workshop. In one place, another 10 feet had to be dug out before a foundation could be laid. Another area of peat has to be removed from the nearby site of the five cell blocks. To complicate matters, two bore springs will have to be drained.
i As the peat is removed the i holes are filled with dry clay ; or scoria “It all takes time—and i money,” said Mr Harper. i Mr Harper expects founda- i tion work on the 38,000 square foot workshop will start next i week. i Grading and levelling of the i site for the five two-storey ] cell blocks is now being done. 1
A kitchen and laundry is planned between the cells. Similar work for the remaining amenities and reception block should start within a month. About 12,000 tons of concrete and 2000 to 3000 tons of reinforcing steel will be used on the job which is expected to be finished by March. 1968.
