U.S. Bid ForSamoan Timber

(N.Z. Press Association) APIA, January 13. In a move the Prime Minister, Mata-afa, claims could bring “tremendous benefit” to the country, a giant United States’ firm, Potlatch Forests. Inc., has made an offer to the Samoan Government to invest £3 million over the next five years to develop the timber industry of Savaii, Samoa’s largest island. The New Zealand Gov-

eminent has financed the construction of a deepwater wharf now being built at Asau, on Savaii.

The American firm’s investment would cover power and water supplies, reading and a modern mill, capable of handling 50 million super feet a year on a sustained yield basis, with a comprehensive replanting programme.

Exhaustive tests were made last year in the

United States by Potlatch on 26 species of Samoan hardwoods.

“I believe this is a wonderful opportunity for Samoa to make a major step forward in economic development aimed at improving the lot of our people,” said Mata-afa.

A vice-president of Potlatch is expected in Apia later this month for discussions with the Government.
