Pukeuri Stoppage Over Water

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, January 13.

Work stopped at the Waitaki Farmers Freezing Company’s Pukeuri works today after slaughtermen claimed the drinking water was unfit for consumption.

A plant to chlorinate the work’s water supply should be in operation tomorrow morning and it is hoped work will resume after a union meeting at 8 a.m. Water is essential in all stages of a freezing workers’ operations, and the carcases are sprayed before being frozen for export.

When a tap was turned on at the freezing works this morning dirty water flowed.

A letter from the Health Department, in Timaru, claiming that the water supply to the works was “grossly contaminated” was read to today’s union meeting. Representatives of both the union and company declined to comment tonight, but Mr E. J. Neilson, manager of the works, said immediate- steps were being taken Ito overcome the problem.
