RETARDING TOURISM
“Wowser Vote” In N.Z. (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 13. The power of the “wowser vote” was preventing New Zealand from developing fully its tourist potential, Mr E. Baume said in Dunedin today. Mr Baume, a broadcaster from Australia, was commenting on 6 p.m. closing which, he said, created a dead atmosphere around hotels in the evenings. “They say the tourist can be served liquor because he is staying in the hotel, but he can’t go anywhere else for a drink and the local people aren’t around. “And the six o’clock swill in which people drink like pigs is a shocking thing.
“The referendums which brought in 10 o’clock closing in Australian states meant the end of the wowser vote. Once the wowsers were beaten, the politicians were no longer afraid of them. “Now in this part of the world South Australia and New Zealand are the only uncivilised and heathen places—and South Australia won’t stay that way for long."
