“Mangere Facilities Primitive” —Mayor
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 13. Facilities at the Auckland International Airport at Mangere were primitive and left much to be desired, said the Mayor of Auckland (Dr. R. G. McElroy) today.
Dr. McElroy, who returned after a three-weeks’ holiday in Honolulu, said he was disappointed with conditions at the airport. “Auckland is the gateway to New Zealand,” he said. “First impressions are all important and yet it seems we have aspired to the standard of Paraparaumu in the design of our international airport.” Dr. McElroy said New Zealand could expect a tremen-
dous increase in tourist trade with the opening of the airport and its use by international jet services. “Americans who are used to the superb efficiency of Honolulu airport are going to be dismayed when they arrive at Mangere,” he said. “I would have thought that we should have aspired to the best standards in airport facilities and accepted nothing less.”
