£558,335 Owed By Bankrupts

f.V.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 13. Debts proved against bankrupt estates in the Auckland district last year totalled £558,335, the highest figure for several years, said the Official Assignee (Mr E. C Carpenter) today. The figure was usually about £300.000. He said 145 people were adjudged bankrupt and 10 companies—seven fewer than last year—were ordered to be wound up. Of the bankrupts, 70 were liable for between £5OO and £2OOO. Mr Carpenter said that was a reflection not only on people who did not care about paying their bills, but also on creditors, for allowing people so much without checking properly on their backgrounds.
