Postal Service
Sir, —Receiving this morning what I sincerely hope to be my last Christmas card for 1965, I was interested to note that the date-stamp on the envelope read December 8, followed by the usual exhortation to “Post Early.” The card was sent from Melbourne in a sealed envelope, and it would seem that 33 days to cover something under 2000 seamiles (allowing for a diversion to Sydney) is a bit on the slow side for mail deliveries in this day and age.—Yours, etc., IST.
January 10, 1966. [The Chief Postmaster (Mr J. W. Lincoln) replies: "There is not sufficient information in the correspondent’s letter to establish where the delay occurred. It does appear that the Christmas card was dispatched from Melbourne by surface mail and in normal circumstances, depending on shipping, a letter would take 10 days to reach New Zealand by this means. If the correspondent will let me have the envelope, I will be very pleased to further the inquiry.”]
