Work On Thailand Road Soon
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 12. Work will begin in a few weeks on the 110-mile road in North-east Thailand which a New Zealand Army Construction group will help to build.
A party of 15 engineer officers and non-commissioned officers has left in stages by R.N.Z.A.F. DC-6 aircraft.
They include eight married soldiers, their wives, 20 children and seven single or unaccompanied married men. The married sappers will spend two years in Thailand and the others between six and eight months. The New Zealand commitment is spread over three years.
Under the Colombo Plan, the Dominion is contributing £240,000 toward the total cost of about £2 million for the project. The Thais are paying the balance. Most of the New Zealand aid is in the form of American earth-moving and roadmaking machines, which have already arrived in the area.
A soil mechanic laboratory, survey and workshops gear and a range of spare parts are also being given by New Zealand.
Up to 300 Thais will be employed on construction and many of them will be trained by the New Zealand sappers in plant operation, mechanics and various trades. Quarters for the New Zealanders have already been completed by the Thais.
Captain R. K. Rutherford will command the unit.
