N.Z. Attitude To Sport

Sir, —Referring to the Napier Athletic Centre treasurer’s comments on the loss of £5OO on two recent meetings, I can only agree with Mr Dunlop when he says: “New Zealanders are not interested unless we are cleaning up overseas stars.” The same applies to almost all New Zealand sports. If one of our teams happens to win, they are “world beaters,” but if they lose, they are “parttimers.” How does the Olympic oath go? . . . “The important thing is not to win but to take part.” It is high time the so-called New Zealand sports fan started thinking along those lines, instead of letting the tobacco companies meet every bill.—Yours, etc.. FINANCIAL MEMBER. January 12, 1966.
