Four sittings in Christchurch are planned by the Licensing Control Commission when it resumes its review of the Canterbury licensing district on January 31. ; Hearings will be held from January 31 to February 3, on I February 14 and 15. February I*2B and March 1, and March 14 and 15. i The licences of 100 hotels lin Ihe area will be reviewed, land submissions will be ]heard on the desirability of ; new licences.
The commission began its local review on September 28, but adjourned pending a court hearing to test its powers to fix hotel standards in Dunedin. However, the application for a writ of certiorari alleging that the commission had no power to do this was withdrawn after the commission had agreed to a rehearing. The coming review will cover hotels in Christchurch city, the Riecarton and Lyttelton boroughs, and the counties of Waimairi, Malvern, Paparua, Heathcote, Mt. Herbert, Akaroa, Wairewa, Tawera, Ellesmere, Halswell. and Ashburton outside the Ashburton Licensing Trust’s area.
