GLIDING RECORD
Canterbury Man’s Feat (N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM. E. Carr, captain of the Canterbury Gliding Club, set a New Zealand distance gliding record when he landed at Waikawa Airfield, Picton, late yesterday afternoon after a 310-mile flight from Omarama. Carr broke by 15 miles the record set by S. H. Georgeson, also of the Canterbury club, who flew from Omarama to Blenheim (295 miles) during an out-and-return journey about a year ago. Carr’s record is subject to confirmation. He was one of 17 glider pilots who set out from the national gliding camp at Omarama yesterday morning.
The best of the other pilots was K. Wakeman, of Christchurch, who landed in a farm paddock at Tua Marina, a mile beyond the point Georgeson reached on his out-and-return trip. Another pilot landed on the airfield at Clarence Bridge, Others landed at points further south, including Waiau and Culverden. Carr flew a Slingsby Dart. He landed at Picton at 5.50 p.m. after a flight of about six hours. He reached a maximum height of 23,000 ft in the Mount Cook area.
