HEADSTONES DANGEROUS

Board Seeks Removal (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 11. The Cemetery Board of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Remuera, is taking action to have many dangerous and unsightly headstones in the churchyard removed. The board has made application under the Burial and Cremation Act for permission to remove all the monuments and tablets in the burial grounds. The chairman of the board and vicar of St. Mark’s, the Rev. J. Thomas, said today that the cemetery had been closed for about 40 years. Mr Thomas said the only headstones which would be retained would be those of historical interest. These would include those of James Dilworth, founder of Dilworth School, Archdeacon Pritt, a former vicar of St. Mark’s, and members of the pioneer families Hesketh, Bruce and Haywood.

There are about 300 stones in the burial grounds, dating back to 1865.
